π― The Goal
I can turn a table of data into a Bar Chart and a Pie Chart to make the information easier to understand at a glance.
π The Walkthrough: Why Use Charts?
Numbers tell a story, but charts show the picture.
- Bar Charts: Best for comparing different categories (e.g., Which House has the most points?).
- Pie Charts: Best for showing parts of a whole (e.g., What percentage of the total points does each House own?).
The Secret Rule: You must Highlight your data before you click the Chart button! If you don’t highlight the names and the numbers together, the computer won’t know what to draw.
π₯ The Starter File
Download the “Olympic Medal Tracker” below. It has the medal counts for five different countries, but itβs currently just a boring list of numbers.
β The Checklist: Your Task
Open the medal tracker and follow these steps:
- Create a Bar Chart: Highlight the Country names and the Total Medals. Go to Insert > Chart.
- Customize: Use the “Chart Editor” on the right to change the color of the bars.
- Add a Title: Make sure your chart has a clear title like “Total Medals by Country”.
- Create a Pie Chart: Highlight the same data again, but this time change the “Chart Type” in the editor to a Pie Chart.
- Move & Resize: Drag your charts so they aren’t covering your data table.
π Level Up! (Extension)
- 3D Mode: Can you find the setting in the Chart Editor to make your Pie Chart 3D?
- Switching Data: Can you create a chart that only shows “Gold Medals” instead of the “Total”?
